Four Colombian women from a wealthy family in Cali posed for Spain’s ¡Hola! magazine. The picture has sparked an outrage in their homeland. (Screen capture: ¡Hola!)By SANDRO MAIRATA

My major problem with this is that the black women are reduced to ethnic props for a choreographed photoshoot. I’ve never seen any other spread in Hello! or Hola! where wealthy people were photographed with their household staff. Mind you, I’ve only read those magazines in doctor’s waiting rooms, but still; usually the focus is on the wealthy subjects, perhaps their pets, but rarely (if ever) do you see staff in the picture. This entire staging falls all too well in line with this piece by Sir Peter Lely.
My grouse has nothing to do with these women’s profession. Unfortunately, there are limited career opportunities for poor women of colour in the various hemispheres of the world, and being a maid is pretty damn good when one considers the alternatives. However, they still deserve basic human respect and dignity, and this…showcase robs them of that. >=(
wasn’t there a reverse of this by some Black Columbians
